The New Year always brings a crop of fresh kitchen, bath and family room remodeling trends.  This year is no different.  Here are a few of the things we expect to see in Twin Cities home remodeling projects this year.

Kitchen Remodeling

As the economy has improved, kitchen projects have become more common.  In a recent survey of the remodeling industry, 61% of remodelers nationwide expect to complete kitchen projects this year.  They are a good investment in your home.  In Minneapolis and the surrounding Twin Cities area last year, kitchen remodeling projects returned up to 75% of the cost of the project in home resale value.

Space is one of the most valuable commodities in kitchen designs.  Open kitchens create more functional – and social kitchen spaces.  We expect that many of our kitchen remodeling projects this year will include islands.  This trend isn’t new, though.  We’ve seen this trend for several years.

Stainless steel appliances continue to be popular – they add a timeless quality to both classic and contemporary kitchen designs.  This year, though, we expect to install more colored appliances.  White and black appliances are particularly popular, but bolder colors are coming back into the kitchen, too.

Bathroom Remodeling

Bathroom remodeling projects will be nearly as popular as kitchens in 2014.  58% of surveyed remodelers nationwide expect to complete bathroom projects this year.  They also give back financially, recouping up to 65% of the project’s cost in resale value here in the Twin Cities last year.

2014 will be the year of the shower!  Many Minnesota homeowners, especially empty-nesters and those with limited space are moving away from bathtubs to preserve valuable space in their new bathrooms.  For homeowners with plentiful bathroom space, remodeled spaces with separate showers and bathtubs will continue to be popular.

Bathtubs won’t be going away, though.  Many homeowners still enjoy the luxury of a soothing bath.  Rather than build in a tub with a surround, though.  Many Twin Cities homeowners are opting for a standalone tub.  They make bold statements and save  valuable space.

Color

Pantone Radiant OrchidPantone’s color of the year is Radiant Orchid – a bold, vibrant purple hue.  It signals the return of bright, sunny colors to the palate.

Are you bold enough to play with this color in your remodeling project?  It could be a fun accent color in a powder room or master suite!
