Many don’t know that we at Roberts’ have one of the only in-house millwork shops in the Twin Cities. John, our Owner, has been doing this for over 35 years, and has come to understood the value of having the flexibility and creativity that comes with having your own mill, and we think it shows in the custom work we do during all stages of the construction process.

If you can dream it up, we can make it. Our craftsman create timeless, functional pieces for all areas of the home, including but not limited to kitchen cabinets, pantries, islands, bathroom cabinets, bookshelves, entertainment centers, bannisters, molding, and the list goes on.

During the design process, there are a few key points we like to hit with our customers to make sure they are getting exactly what they are looking for in their custom piece.

Define Your Style

It’s easy to get caught up in the latest trend, but its particularly important to think carefully about the style of your home and how a remodeling project will integrate with that style.  What might look good in a magazine may not be right for your family – or for the resale value of your home.

Is it a family affair? Do you all like to hang out and watch movies together or are you often throwing lavish dinner parties? Are your meals quick fixes grabbed in the kitchen? Other important aspects to consider.

And, always be thinking ahead. You may not live in your home forever.  At some point, you may decide to sell your home.  With that in mind, it’s important to consider resale value and the potential market for your home.

Chose Your Wood!

The choice of wood finish for cabinets is often the defining stylistic decision in many remodeling projects. As you consider a remodel, the color and grain of the wood will feature prominently in the final plans.  Here’s a quick overview of the most popular wood finish choices and their unique characteristics.

Cherry – this wood has a natural reddish-brown color and smooth grain are extremely attractive.

Hickory – Hickory’s distinctive look will ensure that your cabinets are one-of-a-kind as it has naturally beautiful patterns.

Maple/Birch – Maple and birch are popular choices, and are dense, heavy woods prized by furniture and cabinet makers for its versatility and durability.

Mahogany –  Mahogany is on the higher-end of options, and polishes to a high luster and often has unique variations in the grain.
